Is a PC Engine CD unit worth looking into?

The CD-ROM² is an add-on attachment for the PC Engine that was released in Japan in 1988 and allows the core versions of the console to play PC Engine games in CD-ROM format in addition to standard HuCards. This made the PC Engine the first video game console to use CD-ROMs as a storage media.

Is a PC Engine CD unit worth looking into?

Post by /turboG16 »

I’ve owned a PC Engine (Japanese) since March, and I have multiple HuCard games that I want to purchase for it. However, I’ve seen that there are also many CD games that seem worthwhile (Rondo of Blood, Gradius 2, Fatal Fury, etc.). The games themselves seem to be priced reasonably, but the CD units seem to go for hundreds and I’m not sure if they’re worth that much since I hear that they are prone to breaking easily. Would I be better off buying the CD unit for my base PC Engine, or would it be more worthwhile to track down a Duo or Duo-R to replace my base PC Engine entirely?
