Grinding Disc Drive Noise.

I have a relative who was thinking about giving me their old PSP. It is a model 3000. But the disc drive makes a loud grinding sound when the disc starts to spin. Is this fixable, or can it damage the discs? I’m not too much of a gamer, but I do enjoy handheld systems, so I’m not sure.
EDIT: I was informed that it was not a grinding noise, but actually a high squealing sound. It sounds like a cassette tape being rewound. It does this with multiple games that have had the shells replaced.
