Xbox Series S GPU Holds Back Multiplatform Development, Dev Claims

Post by PlayStationLifestyle »

While responding to the Gotham Knights frame rate controversy, a Rocksteady developer irked Xbox Series S fans by stating that multiplatform games are “hamstrung” by its “potato” GPU. Lee Devonald, a senior character technical artist, took to Twitter to offer his thoughts on the type of bottlenecks and constraints developers face, and said that one such bottleneck is the Xbox Series S GPU. His Twitter thread quickly devolved into a war of words when followers pointed out that a number of games run at 60 fps on the Series S.
[h=2]Gotham Knights frame rate locked at 30 fps on consoles[/h]For those who haven’t been following, Gotham Knights is locked at 30 fps on consoles because WB Games wants to provide a seamless co-op experience, among other things. This resulted in fans criticizing WB Games, with a number of developers jumping into the studio’s defense. Devonald said that he wishes “gamers understood what 60 fps means in terms of all of the things they lose to make the game run that fast, especially taking into account that we have a current gen console that’s not much better than a last gen one.” Devonald went on to say that the Xbox Series S is the “lowest performer” hamstringing an entire generation of multiplatform games.
