Phantasy Star II problem

[Released: 1988] The Sega Genesis was Sega's most successful console; though Sega has never released a total sales figure quote. Several add-ons were created including the Sega CD and Sega 32X which extended its capabilities.

Phantasy Star II problem

I was making good progress through this early dungeon when all of a sudden everything slowed down immensely except for the music. The menu would take 5 seconds to open and taking a single step took about 3 seconds. Then the music slowed to a crawl until it was one almost unbearable tone. After that, nothing was responding. What exactly happened?
Im using a model 2 Genesis with a Hyperkin HDMI converter if that helps
