RPi cluster with USB boot drives

Post by /RaspberryPi »

Hi all.
I've been trying to build a RPi cluster with USB to SATA adapters and small SSDs. My cluster consists of 3xRPi4 and 2xRPi3B+.
The RPi4 work really great, but with the RPis3...that's a completely different story. I've tried everything, firmware udpdates included, I can't get one of these to reliably boot on a USB drive. It will succeed 3 times, 4 times, then fail afterwards for no obvious reason.
Is there a known, failproof HOWTO to fix this kind of issue?
Any help is very welcome.
Thanks!
