Can't get Displaylink running on Raspberry Pi

Post by /RaspberryPi »

I want to run a displaylink monitor on a Pi (I've got a couple of 3B+ Pis sitting around). I've spent days searching the internet and, apparently, it's possible. However, I simply can't get it to work. The best explanation appeared on this site:

The problem I'm having is I can't, consistently, get the Pi to recognize the monitor when I run dmesg. On the one occasion when the monitor did show up, running ls /dev/fb* only shows fb0, which appears to be for the HDMI port, with or without a display, and never shows fb1.
I'd really like to get this to work -- I think it would be really convenient to use a Pi with my portable and light 15" Displaylink monitor and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Any ideas?
