Raspberry Pi struggling with 3A car charger

Post by /RaspberryPi »

I've got a 12V 3A car charger powering my Pi 4 4GB connected to a 12v power supply and the Pi is very slow (commands taking very long and usb camera not working), I guess it's throttling the CPU. The voltage without the pi is 5.0V, but when I connect the Pi it drops to 4.9V. I tried more chargers and a thicker cable but still slow, although it worked when I connected the Pi directly to 5V - the 12V wires are probably too long and thin. But my question is, why does it needs that much current even when performing basic tasks like checking the temperature on a sensor? Other MCUs like Arduino and Pi Zero W use much less power, especially while in idle or doing light tasks.
