Anyone have a fix for low output/volume over bluetooth?

I have rasperry pi 4 running an official retropie image.
I have successfully setup bluetooth audio but the output is very low.
I tried maxing out the volume in raspberry os.
I also tried turning up the master volume in the ALSA mixer but can't seem to find anything that specifically controls the bluetooth's output
Any ideas?
