Rpi SWAP on USB drive - Discussion topic

Post by /RaspberryPi »

We're all aware of the limited read/write operations of a micro sd card, be that lifetime of the drive and it's speeds are poor. Naturally I came to the conclusion that adding a USB strictly for the purpose of using it as a SWAP drive would free up the I/O of the OS drive and perhaps even increase it's lifetime, while not eating the OS drive's space.
I've heard 'Don't do it!' before, though with my knowledge I cannot see why. If this were something like a PC, I could absolutely see why not, but seeing as we are using a SBC with a micro sd card as our drive, what do we gain to lose?
Please put your thoughts below, I'll be performing tests after writing this post.
