(Help) Is my Genesis broken or just the game?

I have a Genesis (second model) that was gifted to me. It didn't come with any wires so I ended up buying all brand new ones so I don't think it's a problem with that. It turns on with three red lights and my television knows something is plugged in but nothing happens. The screen stays black and there isn't any sound of anything. I only own one game (Sonic and Knuckles) for it so I can't try with different games. I wanna know if this is the console not working or if it's the game itself.
I've never owned a Genesis before so I'm not sure what a working one looks like. Sorry if I sound stupid, ha ha.
