Anyone here managed to get MAME to work?

This has to be one of the most counterintuitive emulators I've come across. You'd expect to open up the program, select a rom, hit enter, and go...but it seems to be far less straightforward than that. I found an online tutorial that said I needed to move all the roms to the roms directory in the MAME folder because apparently they can't work from anywhere else. So I did, and they show up in the "Available" tab. But every single one of them gives this error:

Note: Tried Kawaks as well, but it doesn't seem to recognize any of my roms either. Do Neo Geo emulators need their own special rom format or something? I've got .neo files that work fine with a NeoSD/NeoSD Pro.
